Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a visual examination of the large intestine (or colon) using a lighted, flexible endoscope. The colon is the section of GI tract that leads from the abdomen to the rectum. A piece of equipment known as the flexible colonoscope is used to navigate the many bends in the colon.

A colonoscopy may be performed to screen for or help diagnose the presence of a variety of diseases such as cancer, polyps, colitis, diverticulitis, rectal bleeding and other abdominal symptoms.
